Two separate experiments -- double-slit and diffraction grating -- use a 400-nm electromagnetic wave. In both experiments, a long, flat wall where the results are seen is located 2.00-m across from the slits/grating. The slit separation for the double-slit experiment is 0.20mm. The diffraction grating has 1200 lines per mm.

a. Calculate the distance between the first and second bright spots below the center line for each experiment. Compare your answer for each experiment and explain how the pattern created on the screen by the two experiments would differ.

b. If the slit-width is roughly the same for both, which pattern would have a brighter central maximum? Why?

Light of unknown wavelength passes through a double slit, yielding both double slit and diffraction patterns on a screen that is 1 m away from the slits. You see that the 9th double-slit maximum coincides with the 2nd single-slit diffraction minimum. You also observe that the first diffraction minimum is located 3 cm from the central axis on the screen. (a) What is the ratio of double-slit separation to single slit width, d/a? (b) If d = 72 µm, what...

I have D lines at 589.0 nm and 589.6 nm. A diffraction grating with 531.5 lines per mm is used to observe the discrete spectrum of sodium. The angular separation between the D lines is 0.03 degrees. How far away would an observing screen need to be placed for the D lines to be separated by 1.0 mm? The answer I came up with is 3.2 mm but that does not seem correct.
