2. A) The gametophore of the moss lack the true xylem or phloem
most plants use for water and nutrients transportation. Instead,
they absorb moisture directly by osmosis into cells.
B) List of the parts of the male gametophore of Marchantia:
- Thallus: It is responsible for the process of photosynthesis on
the outer part and stocking food in the inner part. It's also
involved in asexual reproduction because the
gemmae are located on it.
- Gemma cups: The gemma cups are cup-like structures which
contain vegetative reproductive structures called gammae (are found
on thalli), the Gemma cells separates from the
parent and develop into a new individual.
- Rhizoids: Rhizoids are the tiny
structures that functions like a root in support
or absorption. It is responsible for water and nutrients fixation
and absorption from the soil through the process of capillary
action.
- Antheridiophore: The antheridiophore is the stalk-like
structure bearing the male sex organ, antheridia. An antherida
produces and contains antherozoids (or sperm) during
pollination.
