Acute phase reactant proteins are the proteins present in plasma and its concentrations increases or decreases with respect to inflammation .
It is of two type .
Positive acute phase reactant protein - eg : CRP , fibrinogen
Negative acute phase reactant protein - eg: albumin , antithrombin
Pharmacological implication
It is used to diagnose inflammation . Increase in more than 25% of acute phase reactant protein is a marker for inflammation . Like increase in C- Reactive protein is an important marker for inflammation especially atherosclerosis .
It is a diagnostic tool for inflammation. Rise in CRP , , complement C3& C4 .
It is also increased in vasculitis like antiphospholipid antibodies and antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies may be found .
Used for detection of neonatal sepsis where CRP and serum amyloid A ( SAA) and procalcitonin is raised .
These are also used as marker in arteriosclerosis and rheumatic arthritis where CRP , serum amyloid A , and fibrinogen are raised .
It is also used to diagnose rheumatic fever - increase in CRP and ESR .
