Name the four types of biochemical reactions that occur in biological systems, and give an example of each
1. Catobolic reaction:
Breakdown of large molecules into small molecules is called catabolic reaction.
Ex: Cellular respiration is the breakdown of glucose (large) into CO2 & H2O (small).
2. Dehydration synthesis:
Small units (monomers) combine with other similar units to produce polymer by releasing water.
Ex: Glycogen is a polymer produced from the excess glucose.
3. Hydrolysis:
Breakdown of larger molecules (polymers) into monomers in the presence of water is called hydrolysis.
Ex: Glycogen is brokendown into glucose in the presence of water when the glucose is needed for the body.
4). Anabolic reaction:
Simple different molecules are combine to produce larger molecules.
Ex: CO2 & H2O combine by utilizing light energy to produce glucose molecules.
