1. Economic outcomes for immigrants have been declining over the past few decades.
a) Explain why does the changing of source countries matter for economic outcomes?
b) Name and explain two other reasons for declining economic outcomes.
The economic outcome of immigration depends upon many factors including the education level of the immigrants. For example take the case of immigration in United Arab Emirates where people from different parts of the world with higher level of education reached UAE and contributed in its development. Not only their own income level was increased but the overall GDP of the country surged.
Changing the source of countries becomes a matter of concern for the nation where immigrants usually arrive. The United States of America has been the place for many immigrants from different parts of the world. Most of the immigrants from Mexico and Latin American countries along with Asian African countries have contributed in its GDP. However if there is a gradual shift in the source of countries so that immigrants now come from a country with lower level of education then it will affect the productivity of the United States as well as the potential GDP and its growth rate. The status of health and nutrition of the immigrants plays a pivotal role in their productivity. Therefore it matters a lot if immigrants belong to a fairly developed country or an underdeveloped one.
Economic outcomes for immigrants can decline due to racial discrimination where white collar jobs are more preferred to be given to the locals and not to the immigrants. This has been the case for many unemployed workers in the United States of America that belong to different races. There are policies that favour the employment of domestic workers instead of immigrants so that the employees are provided some financial incentives in case they hire domestic workers and not immigrants. These are some economic outcomes that are declining for immigrants in favour of domestic workers.
