Propionic acid is a volatile fatty acid. It is converted to succinyl-CoA via methylmalonyl-CoA as an intermediate. This succinyl-CoA enters TCA cycle to generate oxaloacetate which is a precursor for gluconeogenesis. Oxaloacetate is converted to phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP) by PEP carboxy kinase (PEPCK). This PEP is then converted into glucose via gluconeogenesis.
Oxaloacetate can also be formed from pyruvate via pyruvate carboxylase.
Malate can also converted into pyruvate via malic enzyme.
