What are ways in which we can improve voter turnout in America? What are the pros/cons of your ideas?
There are plenty of reasons for the dismal performance by the
individual citizens in presidential election when they face a
decision of voting or not voting. Sometimes individual voters
presume that their beliefs are not appropriately represented by the
elected officials in their district. Sometimes they believe in a
wave of fame towards a particular candidate so that their vote will
not matter.
They may also believe that the way the government is running cannot
be changed by replacing the government.
Bringing people to voting booth is essential part of restoring
their votes and this can be done by giving them coupons that could
be redeemed against food as and when they reach the voting booth.
Sponsors can also give voters discount cards that could be redeemed
on their stores. Booths can be customised and they can be designed
for different types of people.
There can be Educational videos on the polling booths showing
political issues based on elections and candidates that are
participating in the election. A particular voting day is sometimes
not conducive for voting and instead voters should be given
flexibility to vote anytime during specific period of several days.
Election day can also be made a national holiday so that more and
more participation from the voters can be ensured.
There are specifically no negatives of these policies. The
sponsorship by companies can be argued against because sometimes
companies lobby the potential Government in formation. Giving food
stamps has been criticized and the same is being compared with
giving bribe to voters.
