Menstruation is a phenomenon unique to the girls.
Menstruation is a natural part of the reproductive cycle in which blood from the uterus exit through the vagina.
However, it is surrounded by many of the myths and tabbos that exclude women from many aspects of socio-cultural life.
These myths and tabbos about the menstruation present in many societies impact on girl's or women's emotional state, mentality, lifestyle and most importantly,Health.
Culturally, in many parts menstruation is still considered to be dirty and impure.
Further in the Hindu myth, women are prohibited from participating in the normal life while menstruating.
Not entering in to the pooja rooms and kitchen rooms is a major restriction inthe rural and urban areas when women is menstruating.
Menstruating girls and women are restricted from offering prayers and touching holy books.
There are many bad beliefs about the food which is prepared by the women who is menstruating
Even though menstruation is a natural process,many women and girla tries to hide the menstruation.
Large number of girls in less developed countries drop out of school when they are menstruating.
strategies to combat the menstruation related myths:
Raising awareness among the adolescent girls related to menstrual health and hygiene.
Educating the mother about the good menstrual practice so that they can teache their girl child's.
Community based health education programmes could be organised which are worthwhile in achieving awareness.
Increasing the education status of women play an important role in improving the health status of the community at large and overcoming the cultural tabbos.
Provision of sanitary napkins and adequate facilities for sanitation and washing should be made available with the gender prospective.
Not only women, educating the whole family about the myths and tabbos about menstruation.
Adolescent friendly health services clinics must also have trained manpower to educate girls about menstruation.
ANMs and the local health workers should also taught about the menstruation so that they disseminate this knowledge in the community and mobilize social support against busting menstruation related myths.
Menstruation is nothing but a very normal biological phenomenon,and the adolescent girls and the women should understand that they have power of procreation only because of this virtue.
