Cloning (therapeutic vs reproductive) – what is the difference and what are some applications of therapeutic cloning for human health? How is reproductive cloning carried out?
1) Difference :
Reproductive cloning :involves creating that is identical to the donor by somatic cell nuclear transfer.
Newly created embryo is placed back in the uterine environment.
Dolly sheep is the best example of therapeutic cloning.
It creates a genetic duplicate.
Therapeutic cloning : removal of a nucleus which has the same genetic material from any cell of the body.
Transfer it by injection into an unfertilized egg from which
The nucleus is removed.
2) application of therapeutic cloning:
The cells which are removed by therapeutic cloning are mostly pleuripotent which had the capability to give rise to all
Cells.
Organ transplant could be done using therapeutic cloning.
Therapeutic cloning enhances our understanding of stem cell research. This can lead to new treatment for common diseases by stem cell therapy.
3) reproductive cloning process :
It is also known as somatic cell nuclear transfer.
Donor egg-->removal of nucleus --> empty egg--->organism
--->cell removal of nucleus -->Donor egg -->divide using chemical or electric shock --->embryo -->transfer to host organism
