Solumedrol is sodium saltof methylprednisolone succinate. It acts an an anti inflammatory agent and is steroidal in chemistry.
The given agent is usually admistered intravenously or given intramuscular. The 40mg is available as powder and therefore it should be reconstituted in desired solvents in order to proceed with the administration.
Reconstitution should be done as follows:
For a 40mg sterile powder of the drug
The vial is prepared by reconstituting the powder with sterile water which is bacteriostatic or any other diluents as per USP. Benzyl alcohol is used if preservation required. After the process the resulting solution should be such that it contains 40mg per ml of the solution.
The solution is also adjusted for it's pH and osmolarity.pH is adjusted using NaOH as per standards(maintained between 7.5-8) and for 40mg powder the osmolarity should be maintained at 0.5 .
The solution should be given within 2 days following reconstitution.
An important fact to be noted is that the medication may come with preservation or without. When benzyl alcohol is present as preservative it should be used for pediatric purposes
