Alex Edmans, the London Business School professor at the start of the video, identified a “Happy Worker Premium.” This is a signal to investors that this company has a better chance of producing higher profits due to worker satisfaction. According to the text, job performance is comprised of three factors where motivation (or job satisfaction) is only one factor. What are the other two factors of job performance and how can those two factors be improved if found lacking?
Aaron Hurst, author of the Purpose Driven Economy says that CEOs offer perks as a sign of confidence the company is successful when what managers should be doing is listening to what workers really want, rather than the company giving the workers what the company thinks they want. Which process-based perspective of motivation theory does this imply – equity theory or expectancy theory?
Aaron Hurst says that a study out of Yale shows that intrinsic motivation and rewards are more important than extrinsic motivation and rewards. Mr. Hurst also says when companies offer many extrinsic motivators, like ping-pong tables or yoga sessions, they may have negative consequences rather than positive consequences. What do you think Mr. Hurst means by this statement?
The other two factors of job performance are:
1)work environment:
working environment is a very important factor which has its
influence on workers mood and overall performance of the
employees.this included structural as well as mental
elements.structural elements included furniture and lighting,
proper ventilation etc.mental elements included cooperation among
workers healthy and good competition and overall the working
atmosphere.
2)goal setting:
this is a very important factor of job performance
determinination.goal must be properly ventilated to the employees
as what is to be attained, what are the proper ways of achieving it
etc.
These 2 factors have their respective limitations also.these can
also be improved.like if the employees have a proper mentality and
maintain proper ethics of working then the work environment will be
improved, also if the owners maintain proper office equipment.the
employers must clear the target to the employees and must make a
clear vision to then.
Process based theory of motivation deals with behaviour.having a
fixed target fixed and estimated efforts, targets are expected to be
achieved by mainly 4main ways:
1) conditioning being operant
2) equity
3)goal
4) expectancy
as per the theory stated in the question, expectancy theory
perspective of the process based theory of motivation is
explained.this is so because workers expect that their views and
demands will be followed by the management, and the same is being
done in the summer in the question.
Intrinsic motivation helps in a long run than extrinsic
motivation.it helps in to improve a competence sence in a new
skill, also a satisfaction and accomplished feeling on work
progress.moreover,it brings a sense of voluntarily helping the
juniors for work.
