There are two types of eclipses: solar and lunar. The solar is the Moon passing between Sun and Earth; the lunar is the Earth passing between Sun and Moon.
When the sun, moon and earth line up perfectly, there will be a total eclipse.
The moon will be eclipsed by the earth only on a full moon. That’s because when the moon, in its rotation around the earth, is on the far side, that becomes a full moon, and if the earth blocks the light of the full moon, it’s because the earth has created a shadow across the face of the moon. That’s called an eclipse of the moon.
The sun will be eclipsed by the earth only on a new moon. That’s because when the moon, in it’s rotation around the earth is on the near side, that becomes a new moon, and if the moon blocks the light from the sun, it is because the moon has created a shadow across the face of the earth. That’s called an eclipse an of the sun.
