Kent has been laid off from his job of 10 years. What benefits may he be eligible to collect through unemployment insurance?
Answer to the question:
Kent is eligible for collecting benefits through unemployment insurance. However, in order to get the benefits, he must meet state requirements for wages earned or time worked during the period of time, which is also called as base period. In many states, the base period is first four out of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to the time that the claim is filed and the unemployment benefits are based on reported covered quarterly earnings. The amount earned and total number of quarters worked as employee are used to determine the exact amount of the unemployment benefit. Further, as per the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, he can receive up to 99 weeks of unemployment benefits depending further on the State legislation. Before the said Act, he could have received benefit for up to 26 weeks.
