  1. Researchers conducted a study to evaluate the effect of instruction on the time required to solve a mechanical puzzle. In one condition, students were given the mechanical puzzle and told to solve it as fast as they could and were warned that the puzzle was extremely difficult and they should expect to have difficulty. In a second condition, students were just told to solve the puzzle as fast as they could. The researcher measured the time it took for each student to complete the puzzle.
  1. Identify the dependent variable for this study.
  2. Identify the independent variable for this study.
  3. What scale of measurement is used to measure the dependent variable? Is it discrete or continuous?

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) Identify the dependent variable for this study.

Dependent variable is a variable on which the effect of independent variable is observed. In our case the time taken by each students to solve the mechanical puzzle is observed for two cases.

Hence, the dependent variable for this study is time taken by each students to solve the mechanical puzzle.

b) Identify the independent variable for this study.

Independent variable is a variable on which parameter we differ the effect on dependent variable. In our case the instruction given to students are independent and the effect of instructions on time is studied.

Hence, the independent variable for this study is instructions given to each students to solve the mechanical puzzle.

c) What scale of measurement is used to measure the dependent variable? Is it discrete or continuous?

Since, dependent variable for this study is time taken by each students to solve the mechanical puzzle and it can be observed in continuous measure.

Hence, scale of measurement is used to measure the dependent variable is continuous.

Tasmanian researchers conducted a case –control study to investigate the effect of dietary fat intake on skin cancer. They hypothesised that people whose dietary fat intake is low will be more susceptible to skin cancer. The study compared 500 cases of melanoma with 500 controls who were randomly selected from the state’s electoral roll. The researchers categorised the dietary fat intake into three categories High, Moderate and Low. They found that among skin cancer patients 150 were classified at the...

3. A psychologist wants to determine the effect of instructions on the time required to solve a mechanical puzzle. Each of 20 volunteers is given the same mechanical puzzle to be solved as rapidly as possible. Before the task, the subjects are randomly assigned in equal numbers to receive two different sets of instructions. One group is told that their task is difficult (M1), and the other group is told that their task is easy (M2). The score for each...

Researchers conducted a study to find out if there is a difference in the use of eReaders by different age groups. Randomly selected participants were divided into two age groups. In the 16- to 29-year-old group, 7% of the 627 surveyed use eReaders, while 11% of the 2,314 participants 30 years old and older use eReaders. Use α = 0.05. For subscripts let 1 = 16- to 29-year-old users, and 2 = 30 years old and older users. 1. State...

To study the effect the ecological impact of malaria, researchers in California measured the effect of malaria on what distance an animal could run in 2 minutes. They used a sample of a local lizard species, Sceloporis occidentalis, collected in the field. They selected 15 lizards from those found to be infected with the malarial parasite Plasmodium mexicanum and 15 lizards found not infected. The distance each lizard could run in a time limit of 2 minutes was recorded in...

In a study, researchers wanted to measure the effect of alcohol in the development of the hippocampal region in adolescents. The researchers randomly selected 26 adolescents with alcohol use disorders to compare the hippocampal volumes in the alcoholic adolescents to the normal volume of 9.08 cubic centimeters. An analysis of the sample data revealed that the hippocampal volume was distributed normally with a mean of 8.35 cm cubed and a standard deviation of 1.67 cm cubed. a.   The researchers wanted...

In a study, researchers wanted to measure the effect of alcohol on the hippocampal region, the portion of the brain responsible for long-term memory storage, in adolescents. The researchers randomly selected 19 adolescents with alcohol use disorders to determine whether the hippocampal volumes in the alcohol adolescents were less than the normal volume of 9.02 cm3. An analysis of the sample data revealed that the hippocampal volume is approximately normal with x=8.06 cm3 and s=0.7 cm3. Conduct the appropriate test...
