If the tower is 45 feet in height, how far is the partner from the base of the tower?

From the top of a fire tower, a forest ranger sees his partner on the ground at an angle of depression of 40 degrees. If the tower is 45 feet in height, how far is the partner from the base of the tower?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given:

The angle of depression is 40°

Height of the tower is 45ft

To find angle we must subtract the angle of depression by 90°

Hence we get , 90-40=50°

Now to find distance we can use

D=h (tan(angle))

Putting the values

D= 45 (tan(50))

D= 45×1.19175

D=53.2867 ~ 53.63 ft

The distance at which his partner is from base is 53.63ft.

The Eiffel Tower is 325 metres tall. Assuming the earth is perfectly spherical, how far can a person with perfect eye-sight can see from the top of the Eiffel Tower? Again, a good sketch would come in very handy for this problem. Since the precise definition of the word ”far” is somewhat unclear, an approximate answer should suffice. If you make any assumption, then explain why they are reasonable assumption.
