What practical application arises from the wave-particle duality of electrons? Explain

Solutions

Expert Solution

The varying behaviors and properties of the electron do not allow it to be as a particle or as a wave. This two-sided nature of the electron is known as the Wave-Particle duality of the electrons.

Actually, it is the concept of quantum mechanics in which every particle may be described in terms not only of particles, but also in terms of waves.

Practical Applications Arises from the wave-Particle duality of electrons are as follows-

  1. It is used in electron microscopy( the small wavelengths that are associated with the electrons may be used to view such objects which are smaller than what is used to visible while using visible light ).
  2. neutron diffraction( use of high energy neutron beams for crystallography).
  3. Photoelectric effect: Electromagnetic radiation here behaves like a particle (the photon) rather than just a wave and makes an electron free from their atoms using sufficient energy ( called Threshold).
