Follow the water passing through lake ray Hubbard and Lake Lavon. What chemical is added at the pumping stations for the water at the lakes? What chemicals are added at the plant and explain why each one is used to purify the water. What is the function of the settling basins? After leaving the settling basins the water flows to the sand filters. Describe the structure of a sand filter. How do they clean a sand filter? Water then flows to the pumping station and then to storage tanks. Where are the pumping station and storage tanks located locally? What are the big green tanks around the city used for? What is the function of running water through wetlands before pumping it to Lake Lavon?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answering the first four question only

What chemical is added at the pumping stations for the water at the lakes?

Chemicals such as lime, ferric sulfate, chloramines (chlorine and ammonia), powdered activated carbon, polymers, ozone, carbon dioxide and fluoride are added to water purify it by removing impurities and , killing pathogens and improving its taste and odor quality

What chemicals are added at the plant and explain why each one is used to purify the water.

Chemicals such as chlorine and ammonia collectively called as chloramines are used to disinfectant the water at plant. Sometimes ozone disinfection along with chloramines is used to reduce the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and by products of chlorine disinfection

What is the function of the settling basins?

In settling basins water is allowed to flow for four to eight hours so that large particles of silt and other suspended matter can be allowed to settle to the bottom and out of the water

After leaving the settling basins the water flows to the sand filters. Describe the structure of a sand filter.

Bed of anthracite, coal, sand and gravel

The Current method for 100% detection of contraband passing through X-Ray screeners by TSA agents in the United is 14%. We develop a new way that teaches screeners to use different color schemes to illuminate items such that a person can see the items in the color scheme that makes sense to them. Out of the 24 TSA agents that volunteered to participate in a program, 8 were now capable of 100% detection. Perform an appropriate hypothesis test to determine...

Problem 1 (20 pts) Problem 1.3 rice Pure water is passing through a tube constructed of solid Citric acid. Since citric acid is slightly soluble in water (denote solubility as C* moles acid/cm3 solution), the inner walls of the tube will dissolve very slowly. At what temperature will water boil at Lake Tahoe? Lake Tahoe is approximately 1900 m above the sea level. The molar mass of air is 29.0 g/mol. Assume that air pressure at sea level is 1.00 atm and the air temperature is constant with elevation at 20 degrees Celsius. The molar heat of vaporization of water is 41.0 kJ/mol.
