1.How many chromosomes do you inherit from your mother?

2.How about from your father?

3.Where did they get their chromosomes from?

4.What is the purpose of cell division (aka cell reproduction) via Mitosis?

5.What is the purpose of Meiosis?

Solutions

Expert Solution

ANSWER 1 - 23 chromosomes are inherited from mother.

ANSWER 2 - 23 chromosomes are inherited from father.

ANSWER 3 - They also get their chromosomes from their parents.

Explanation of both answers (1, 2 & 3) : In human sexual reproduction is the only mode of reproduction. In this process gametes are formed and each gamete contain only half of the chromosome (haploid) as compared to their parent cell (diploid). This is achieved by meiosis and it is the main purpose of meiosis. Then these gametes fuse with each other to form a zygote (diploid) which again have complete set of chromosomes. Therefore half of our chromosomes are inherited from mother and half of chromosomes from father.

Similarly all individuals in sexually reproducing species recieve their chromosomes from both of their parents.

ANSWER 4 - In mitotic cell division the newly formed cells are similar to their parent cells in all aspects. Therefore mitosis is used in growth and repair of body.

ANSWER 5 - Purpose of mitosis is to produce haploid gametes, to carry out the process of sexual reproduction.
