What are four reasons that BOD5 is tested at a WWTP?
ANSWER:-
Biological oxygen demand, 5 days test is usually performed for 5 days. It tells us that what amount of dissolved oxygen is required by the aerobic organisms to break down organic material present in a water sample.
(1) The total BOD consists of two measurements- Carbonaceous BOD (CBOD) and Nitrogenous BOD (NBOD). The CBOD is the quantity of oxygen required by microbes to break down organic components (Carbon containing compounds) in water which is 68% of total BOD.
In first five days, dissolved oxygen present in water is mostly consumed for organic matter decomposition. That's why, 5 day BOD is used as standard one to represent the amount of “Dissolved Oxygen“ consumed by microbes to convert the organics present to carbon dioxide and water.
(2) An initial BOD measurement is taken on the same day and one is taken after 5 days. The difference that we get is the amount of oxygen consumed by the organism in order to break down organic compounds. It is better than BOD 3 because it gives reliable results.
(3) The graph generated by BOD5 results is more accurate as compared to BOD3
