Assignment 8: Energy Calculations

Using Table 8-3 in your textbook, calculate the amount of expended kcalories for each of the identified activities. Show each step of the calculation process.

1.   Male client weighing 175 pounds who does weight lifting (vigorous effort) for 15 minutes three times a week.

2.   Female client weighing 138 pounds who plays golf once a week carrying her clubs and averages 120 minutes on the golf course.

3.   Male client weighing 75 pounds who plays soccer (vigorously) three times a week for 45 minutes at each attempt.

4.   Female client weighing 115 pounds who rides a bicycle (averaging 19 mph) each day for 20 minutes.

5.   Male client weighing 189 pounds who is wheeling himself in a wheelchair for 15 minutes.

  • What is hyponatremia? Why is hyponatremia dangerous to athletes?
  • Why are athletes more likely to experience hyponatremia despite adequate fluid intake during physical activity?
  • What are some ways that athletes can reduce the risk of getting hyponatremia during activity? Be sure to provide examples to explain your answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Formula for calculation of expended energy(calories per hour) = MET × weight(kg)

MET = Metabolic equivalents for particular activity.

1)Weight = 175 = 79.379kg

Activity = weight lifting (vigourous ) , MET = 6

Time = 15min

Energy expended = 6 × 79.379 = 476.274 cal / hr

For 15 min energy expended is = (476.274 × 15)÷60

= 119.0685

Done 3 times a week = 119.0685 × 3 = 357.2 calories / wk

Total 357 calories expended per week

2)Weight = 138 pounds = 62.596kg

Activity = golf carrying clubs weekly once , MET = 4.3

Time = 120 min

Energy expended = 4.3×62.529 = 296.1628 cal / hr

For 120 min energy expended = (296.1628 ×120)÷60

=538.3256

Total 538 calories were expended per week

3)Weight= 75 pounds = 34.019kg

Activity = soccer (vigorously) , MET = 10

Time = 45min

Energy expended = 10×34.019= 340.19cal/hr

For 45 min energy expended = (340.19×45)÷60

=255.1425

For 3 times a week = 255.1425 ×3 = 765.1425

Total 765 calories were expended per week.

4)Weight = 115 pounds = 52.163kg

Activity = bicycle 90mph , MET = 10

Time = 20 min

Energy expended = 12×52.163= 62.956 cal / hr

For 20 min =( 62.956 × 20)÷60= 208.652

Total 208 calories were expended per day

5)Weight = 189 pounds = 85.729kg

Acitivity = Wheel chair user , MET = 1

Time = 15min

Energy expended =1×85.729= 85.729cal/ hr

For 15 min = (85.729×15)÷60 = 21.43225

Total 21 calories were expended per 15 min.
