Peripheral artery disease is a chronic disorder in which partial or total arterial occulsion deprives the loer extremities of oxygen and nutrients.Tissue damage occure below the arterial occulsion.Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of peripheral areterial diasease.
Patient centered care includes as follows:
a Assess the pain
b. Monitor the extremities for color ,motion and sensation,
c. Assist in developing an individualized exercise program ,which is initated gradually and slowly increased.
d. Encourage prescribed exercie ,which will improve arterial blood flow through the development of collateral circulation.
e. Instuct the client to walk to the point of claudication stop and rest ,and then walk a little farther.
f. Instruct the client to avoid crossing of legs ,which interfers blood flow.
g. Inform the patient about the importance of medication.
h.Ask them to avoid tobacco and caffeine because of the vasoconstructive effects.
i. Instruct them to never apply direct heat to the legs,because decreased sensitivity of the legs will cause burning.
j. Avoid exposure to cold.
k. The client is instructed to elevate the feet at rest but to refain from elevating above the level of heart.
