managing PIH in pregnancy
PIH - pregnancy Induced Hypertension also known as Gestational Hypertension or toxemia or preeclampsia. This is the condition that leads to health problems to mother and baby after the 20th weeks of pregnancy . If left untreated , it may cause high Blood pressure , protein in urine and other serious problems.It occurs in 5to8% of all pregnancies.
Managing PIH - For managing PIH the doctor must order diagnostic tests to determine PIH presence by urinalysis.
1. Medical Management - Many therapies and medications are given by physician like Antiplatelet therapy and administrating medications to prevent eclampsia and avoid it's progression .There is no need of surgical treatment as it can be managed by medications and intervention.
2. Nursing Management - Diagnose the patient with signs and symptoms through high blood pressure , urine test or presence of edema on face and fingers etc. The nurse can prevent PIH by -
- By promoting healthy diet or good nutrition.
-To prevent bed rest in a recumbent position to aid secretion of sodium and reduce physical activity.
-Taking blood pressure medication and avoid other medicines or supplements without doctor prescription.
- Provide Information to patient concerned home assessment and regular medical attention.
3 . non pharmacological management- provide emotional support to women during pregnancy, educating them about complications, giving relaxation techniques to avoid stress .
