National character is all about stereotypical beliefs about social,physical and mental characteristics.
Most people belonging to a particular culture may hold beliefs about personality characteristics typical of members of their own culture.
Perceptions could be based upon the individual's personal experiences or just by holding inaccurate stereotypes.
National character is somehow a social concept but personality traits of an individual are biological or heritable.
For example, the belief that women are warm and caring,and men are less emotional and instrumental is something that is considered universal across all cultures.
A study on cross-cultural differences also indicated that dissimilar countries like India,Argentina or Germany have personality traits of Extraversion which includes being warm and outgoing is similar.
Perceptions about national character are just social construction people use in a defining a typical member of ones's society. These perceptions or generalizations get commnunicated maybe through media,education and jokes.
But the personality traits of an individual is a part of their own.
National stereotyping of character can lead to prejudice or discrimination thats why its not an appropiate means to judge someone's personality.
Every individual within the society or culture is different,have different backgrounds,experiences and knowledge that actually make up their aggregate personality.
Perceptions about national character is an easy way to explain typical behaviour but not accurate.
