1) Determine if you should use a confidence interval for the mean or a confidence interval for proportions for each variable:

a.The number of hot dogs eaten in a day

b.The percentage of cancer patients who recover after treatment

c.The micrograms of cholesterol in a person’s blood stream

d.The percentage of defective products in a shipment.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:
We need to determine we will use confidence interval for the mean or confidence interval for proportions for variables
a. Variable is the number of hot dogs eaten in a day, Here we are talking about numbers of hot dogs no about proportions so we will use Confidence interval for the mean.
b. Variable is the percentage of cancer patients who recover after treatment, Here we are not talking about numbers or average but we are talking about proportion or percentage of cancer patients, So we will use Confidence interval for proportions.
c. Variable is The micrograms of cholesterol in a person’s bloodstream. Here we will measure micrograms of cholesterol in a person's bloodstream in Mg's not in proportion so we will use Confidence interval for the mean.
d. Variable is The percentage of defective products in a shipment. Here we are taking about proportions so we will use confidence interval for proportions.
