2. G’s jokes are represented by 1 mole of a solid at temperature T1 < 273K. They are so savage that when you put them in an ocean of mass M,
initially at temperature T2 > 273 K, 2 / 3 of that ocean freezes (and the jokes remain solid). You may assume both cm of liquid ocean and
∆ Hm of melting ocean at Tmelt = 273 K are known.
a) What is the molar specific heat of G’s jokes?
b) What is the change in the entropy of the universe as a result of G’s jokes interacting with
the ocean?
c) Challenge mode (do this last). Is your answer in b) consistent with the second law of
thermodynamics? Prove why or why not.
