Expert Solution

Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of a body. cell contains organelles which carry different functions. the functions of the cells include providing structure and support to the body, control growth, transport of nutrients, producing energy, metabolic reactions, reproduction.
structure and support: a group of cells together make a tissue, a group of tissues together make an organ, a group of organs make an organism. that means cells provide the structural base of all organisms.
Growth: in organisms, tissues grow by multiplication of cells. cells break down into two daughter cells which are identical to it. it happens in the name of mitosis and meiosis.
Transport: cells allow passage of nutrients and gases for various chemical reactions happen in the cells. for example cells allow exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide for the process of respiration.
Production of energy: for an organism to survive, it requires energy. hence the energy is produced through various reactions in the cell. for example process of photosynthesis in plants and process of respiration in animals.
Reproduction: cells undergo reproduction for the survival of species. the reproduction is carried out by mitosis(asexual reproduction) and meiosis(sexual reproduction).
