With any topic in nursing education, it is important to understand both the pros and cons for any topic in nursing education. This week, our conversation focuses on the rebuttal of several commonly occurring cons of the use of serious gaming and virtual reality within any type of nursing educational setting (i.e., academic, professional development, or patient education).
Select one of the following cons and provide a professional rebuttal.
Con 1: Gaming/virtual reality decreases the attention span of learner
I totally oppose the statement. Because there is the use of educational virtual reality learning in the nursing school to show the procedures or many mechanisms of life that is called simulation-based learning.
Simulation-based learning is virtual reality learning. This includes the use of dummies which are the same as a human being and some simulator dummy can respond back as the normal patient does in the hospital. This gives the students to learn how to handle a patient by using this simulator and increase the attention to learn more regarding how to do the procedure, how to react to a situation. They perform and practice their skills in the simulator dummy first and then they go and do in the real patient. This kind of educational learning decreases medical error which is faced by students in the hospital. In this virtual base learning, the student learns by doing so it increases the attention of the span of learning. This virtual reality learning is included in every college to improve the skill and knowledge of the students in every colleges.
