Hildegard Peplau was an American nurse who gave interpersonal relationship theory in nursing care. She was a prolific writer and her major writings reflects her contributions to the field of nursing.

In her major writing, she emphasized the nurse - patient relationship. According to her, this relationship was the foundation of nursing practice. Her writing includes that the purpose of nursing is to help others identify their difficulties and nurses should apply principles of human relations to problems that arise at all levels of experience. Both nurse and patient should work together to become mature and knowledgeable in the process.

Her writing led the way towards humane treatment of patients with behavior and personality disorders and contributed significantly to mental health law reform. Her writings mentions that psychiatric nurses should provide truly therapeutic care to patients, rather than the custodial care that was prevalent in the mental hospitals of that era.

Her writing describes the six nursing roles that lead into the different phases. The six nursing roles are stranger role, resource role, teaching role, counseling role, surrogate role, and leadership role. According to her, the nurse - client relationship consists of four developmental stages such as orientation phase, identification phase, working phase, and termination phase.

These are some of the highlights of the major writing of Hildegard Peplau which have significantly revolutionized the nursing practice.
