Carbon 14 dating :

Radiocarbon dating is a method that provides objective age estimates for carbon based materials that originated from living organism. An age could be estimated by measuring the amount of carbon 14 present in the sample and comparing this against an internationally used standard .

Carbon 14 is an isotope of element carbon that is unstable and weejly radioactive. Carbon 14 is continually former in upper layer of atmosphere by the effect of cosmic ray neutrons on nitogen 14 atoms. By knowing how much carbon 14 left in the sample the age of the organism when it died can be known.

Carbon 14 is mostly used to date once living things ( organic). It can not be used directly to date rocks however it can potentially be used to put time constraints on some inorganic material such as diamond. Because of rapid rate of decay of carbon 14 , it can only give dates in thounsands - of- year range and not millions.it could not predict the correct age of Earth. So it is not so reliable.

Carbon-14 dating works for fossils up to about 75,000 years old; fossils older than that contain too little 14C to be detected. Most dinosaurs went extinct 65.5 million years ago. (a) Can 14C be used to date dinosaur bones? Explain. (b) Radioactive uranium-235 has a half-life of 704 million years. If it was incorporated into dinosaur bones, could it be used to date the dinosaur fossils? Explain.

Carbon 14 (C-14), a radioactive isotope of carbon, has a half-life of 5730 ± 40 years. Measuring the amount of this isotope left in the remains of animals and plants is how anthropologists determine the age of samples. Example: The skeletal remains of the so-called Pittsburgh Man, unearthed in Pennsylvania, had lost 82% of the C-14 they originally contained. Determine the approximate age of the bones assuming a half-life of 5730. (a) 14,000 years (b) 15,000 years (c) 17,000 years...

Nuclear disintegration and carbon dating. a) The rate of decay of a radioactive nuclide is proportional to the number of nuclei N present at time t, where the proportionality constant is given by the decay constant λ: dN dt = −λN Derive an expression for the number of nuclei as a function of time N, using N0 as the number of nuclei that are present initially (at t = 0). b) Derive the relationship between the half-life T1/2 and the...
