How does Ocean Acidification work?
Why does acidification matter?
How is acidification linked to climate change?
How do we deal with Ocean Acidification?
What’s the big picture?
1. OCEAN ACIACIDIFICATION:-
- when carbon dioxide is absorbed by seawater, certain chemical
reactions occur that reduce-
seawater pH
HCO3- ion concentration
saturation calcium carbonate minerals
- these chemical reactions are termed ocean acidification.
2. IMPORTANCE OF SEA ACIDIFICATION:-
-Because of sea acidification some marine species have lost their
shells and lower growth rates.
-Acidification also alters the cycling of nutrients in the
ocean.
-and it determine impacts on marine ecosystems and the food
web.
3. ACIDIFICATION VS. CLIMATE CHANGE:-
- oceans are the largest single carbon sink in the world.
- the more CO2 the oceans absorb, the more acidic. because some of
the carbon reacts within the water to form carbonic acid.
- This is a slow process.
- acidification will make the oceans much less hospitable to many
forms of marine life and acidification may actually to serve to
amplify overall warming.
4. REDUCING ACIDIFICATION:-
- Reduce carbon pollution
- public litigation
- environmental education to every one
- compaign and other organisations
5. BIG PICTURE:-It is a free and impartial educational resource for biology teachers and students exploring the innovations and implications of cutting-edge science.
