In western society, we believe that germs cause illness. What other cultural or religious explanations exist for why we might get sick? What do other cultures believe might cause an illness? How might these affect treatment?
Cultural and religious practices plays a role in health issues and treatment measures. As we are health care providers , we should respect the cultural practices of patient. Besides help the patient to promote health and prevent disease and illness.Identify the cultural issues releted to patient and also family members.
White Americans are the people who are citizens of U.S. and also who are having the origin in Middle East , Europe and North Africa. They speak language of their own origin and English. For these people , eye contact is very important. During communication, they beleive that eye contact will create trust worthiness. So when talking to people or whenever giving care , maintain eye contact. Trust is very essential in patient care. So build a trust worthy relationship. Asess each individual for cultural preference , when giving care. White Americans beleive that health is an absence of disease and illness. Treatment will not get much affected due to their beliefs , customes and tradition.
Hispanic group of people who speaks Spanish and English. Most of the people have the origin in Spain. These people are so expressive in nature. They verbalize their feelings so expressive and they use body language like facial expressions and getures to express their feelings. For this group of people , when we want to show respect , avoid eye contact. These people beleive that health is a gift of God. Health is based on good luck. They beleive that if they do wrong or evil behavior , God will punish them by giving sickness and illness. ill health is the punishment of God for their sins. Treat each and every patient and their relatives with respect and consider their reigious beliefs. Always ask permission to touch children to give care. Explain the procedure and treatment method to the patient. Maintain confidentiality.
