Criminal - It involves the study of facts , evidences , witnesses etc. It is a applied science A complete criminal investigation can include Searching, interviews, interrogations, evidence collection and preservation are included in a complete criminal investigation. it involves commiting of activities that are prohibited by the law.

Non criminal - Activites that are not prohibited by law or a person is unsure if it is a crime or not.

Reactive - It is used when there is a urgent need to intervene by the investigators , moreover when too delay can result in serious crimes or can cause serious threats to victims.

Proactive- It is conducted when info says that a criminal activity is already happening and it is in continuation.These info is is obtained through intelligence-gathering or from reports of witnesses. There is no imminent threat to witnesses, meaning that investigators do not have to respond immediately.

Overt-It is an normal investigation and the person knows that the investigation is taking place.

Covert- It is secret investigation.
