If I use Cautionary and Advisory Labels (CAL), and include a Consumer Medicines Information

when I dispense a prescription, I don’t need to counsel the patient as well.”Discuss this

statement.

  • This statement is justiable according tp Dispensing Practice Guidelines by Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. It claims that Cautionary and Advisory Label [CAL] can reinforce and rather replace the verbal counselling, provided the patient understanding and following the instructions in CAL is ensured.
  • In case of uneducated or illiterate people this will not work as needed. Same is in the case of people who are not interested to read or suffer from headache on reading or so on.
  • Some people wish to get verbal personal counselling rather than a CAL, and they should be treated according to their preference considering the time availablity.
  • CAL actually reduces the counselling as they are preformulated, printed and packed.
  • Cal also clarifies the points clearly as it never miss any data which can be missed by chance during a verbal counselling.
  • In fact, if used properly at right time for the right paatients, CAL has good number of advantages, whereas if it is applied in a substandad way to wrong patients, it may affect the quality of cae and subsequently the patient compliance and outcome.
