Describe how an ultrasound transducer works?
Include a discussion of the energy form used to create images and
how that interacts with tissues in the body.
Ultrasound transducer and its working
Transducer is a device that converts energy from one form into another . Ultrasound in medicine, is the use of ultrasonic waves for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Ultrasound Transducers also called as Ultrasonic transducers or probe. They are the devices that generate ultrasound , that bounce off body tissues and makes echo , with help of a sensor transducer ,can send this echo to a computer to develop an image.
Ultrasound is a sound with frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing, which is approximately 20 kilohertz. Transducers have transmitters and sensor/ reciever. Transmitter in the transducer produces ultrasound from the vibrations created from Piezoelctric crystal arrangement by the use of electricity. Electric signals that are converting into ultrasound enters the body tissue and bounce off from there. The sound waves can reflect back from the boundaries between the tissues or fluids. When the sound waves are reflecting back , it can receive by a sensor and can transmit back to the probe and these sound waves can create electricity in the scanner . By calculating the speed and time of each echo sound , the computer used for scanning can calculate the distance between the tissue boundary and the transducer. This distance calculation can help to create the images, of organs and tissues. This two dimensional images can help the physicians greatly for the diagnostic purpose.
Ultrasound transducer and the technique ultrasound scanning is of having great use in the diagnostic field as it is non invasive and non ionizing technique. This imaging technique is mainly used in monitoring fetal growth in the womb, imaging of breast, heart , brain , blood vessels , abdominal organs etc.
