Describe how energy from sunlight is converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP. Be thorough.
During photosynthesis, sunlight's energy us used to synthesize ATP and NADPH. This occurs in light reaction of photosynthesis.
In light reaction, when sunlight falls on Photosystem 2 of chlorophyll P680, a molecular of water is split into hydrogen and oxygen, due to this splitting 2 excited electrons are produced. This process is called photolysis of water.
These excited electrons are transferred to Primary electron acceptor molecule which transfers them to pheophytin. Later these electrons are transferred to quinone A (Qa) and then to quinone B (Qb). After this electrons are transferred to a cytochrome complex which further transfers them to plastocynin.
As the electrons are transferred from primary electron acceptor to plastocynin. The electrons move to lower energy level. When are electrons are transferred by cytochrome complex, the decreased energy is used to synthesize one ATP molecule from ADP.
That's how sunlight or energy from sunlight is used to produce ATP.
