A mechanic is trying to tune the engines in a twin engine plane much like a string instrument can be tuned by listening to the beat frequency when two notes are played simultaneously. The mechanic has one engine running perfectly at a desired 4500 rpm and is trying to adjust the other to the same speed. He slowly detunes the second engine from a larger rpm until he first discerns a beat frequency amplitude that occurs once every 12 s. To what rpm is the second engine tuned? The answer is 4505 rpm

Solutions

Expert Solution

Consider the frequency of larger rpm as F
4500 rpm = 4500/60 = 75 Hz
Beat frequency, f = 1/12 = 0.0833 Hz

F - 75 = 0.0833
F = 75 + 0.833
= 75.833 Hz
= 75.833 x 60 rpm
= 4505 rpm

In an engine cycle like the one shown in Figure
In an engine cycle like the one shown in Figure    heat is added over a range of temperatures. Explain why even if it were run reversibly, its efficiency would be less than the Carnot limit defined by the high- and low-temperature set points and shown in the figure ( ηC = T4-T2)/T4. Is this in itself a disadvantage of such a cycle?

A manufacturer of small engines concerned with the issue of noise pollution developed a new engine that would, it was hoped, be quieter than the standard model. Forty-one of the new models were tested for noise level and compared with 65 of the standard models. The results are given below with noise measured in decibels. (The higher the decibel is, the higher the noise level is ). Assume that the noise levels of both the standard and the new model...
