A gas turbine (combustion tubine) is a type of internal
combustion engine which uses gases flamable gases or light
distillate petrolium product like gasoline which happen to be
available locally, though natural gas is most commly used as working
fluid. The basic principle of gas turbine is a Brayton cycle (air as
working fluid).
Application of gas tubine engines :-Gas tubine engine is used
to propell air crafts and ships, running a compressor or generating
elctrical power etc.
Now gas engine turbines alomost completely replaced piston
cylinder engines on new corporate-sized twin-engine aiircrafts.The
gas engines usage intead of piston engine have various benifts as
follows :-
Power to weight ratio :-Gas engine have
capacity to generate higher power to weight ratio.Piston engines
are bulky, heavier against gas turbine for the same power
output.
Thermal efficiency :-Gas turbines operates at
very high temperature,so it have high thermal efficiency than the
piston engine.
Compactness :-The gas tubine engine is more
compact than the piston engines,so it need less space as compare to
the pistion engine. It have simpler design than piston engine.
Fewer moving parts :-In the gas tubine lesser
moving parts as compare to the piston engine. In piston engine due
to many moving components it have some problem regarding the
stabilty(higher inertia)and erosion.
Reduced emmision :-The gas tubine engine also
have less emmision than the piston engine.
Reliabilty :-Gas tubine engine are almost
hundred of time reliable than the piston engines. There is no fear
to fail the parts of the gas engine due to vibration. They are also
many times more powerful than the piston engines ever made.Gas
tubine can be scaled upto 20 times much.
