2. How many ATP molecules are needed to give 22 kcal of energy? How much energy is given by 7.5 moles of ATP?
5. How many ATP will be produced if maltose is degraded and it undergoes glycolytic pathway only?
6. How many ATP will be produced if maltose is completely oxidized through cellular respiration?
7. How many ATP will be produced if the amino acid leucine will be used as a metabolite in the krebs cycle?

Solutions

Expert Solution

2)

As, 1 ATP gives 1.769 kcal. So around 12.5 ATP produce 22 kcal of energy.

7.5 moles of ATP produce 13.27 Kcal of energy.

5)

Maltose is made of two glucose residues and joined by a Alpha glycosidic linkage.

Each glucose in gycolytic pathway produce 2 ATP and 2 NADH. This 2 NADH undergoes Election transport chain and produce 5 ATP.

As maltose has two residues of glucose, so 4 ATP and 4 NADH are produced.

So, total ATPs produced are 7ATP.

6) Total no. Of ATP produced by complete oxidation of each glucose molecule through cellular respiration is 32 ATP.

As maltose contains 2 residues of glucose, so it produces 64 ATPs.

7)

When leucine enters kreb cycle it produces 6 NADH, 2 FADH and 2 ATP MOLECULES are produced.

1 NADH produce 2.5 ATPs and 1 FADH produce 1.5 ATPs through Electron transport chain.

So. Total ATP produced through kreb cycle is 20 ATPs.

Which yields more ATP, fats or carbs? Using a flow chart, indicate how many ATP molecules are generated from the complete oxidation of 2 glucose molecules. Contrast with the complete oxidation of a 12-carbon fatty acid. In your discussion indicate how many NADH and FADH2 and ATP are produced and in what pathway. Your final answer should be expressed as the #ATP /2 glucose and #ATP/12-C fatty acid. (5 marks)

Compare how many ATP molecules can be maximally formed by the breakdown of a glucose molecule in a cell lacking mitochondria, a cell that has mitochondria with ion channels specific to protons in its inner membrane, and a cell that has normal mitochondria. Justifications for the calculations must be given and full accounts of the calculations must be provided so that the number of ATP molecules can be traced back to relevant reactions / processes.
