Assume that the co-polymer is a 1:1 mixture of styrene and maleic anhyride and draw the structure of the repeating monomer unit. Calculate the percent yield based upon the amount of maleic anhydride used. Use the molecular weight of one repeating monomer unit for the weight of the product.
- 2.5 mL of styrene used
- 1.581 g of maleic anhydride used
- actual yield for nylon= 0.805 g
- molecular weight of one repeating monomer unit= 226.32 g/mol
maleic anhydrie ---------------------> co-polymer
98 g 226.32 g
1.581 g ?
? = (1.581 g/ 98 g) x 226.32 g polymer
= 3.65 g polymer
This is theoretical yield of polymer.
But, given that actual yield for nylon= 0.805 g
Hence,
% yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield ) x 100
= ( 0.805 g / 3.65 g) x 100
= 22.05 %
Therefore, percent yield = 22.05 %
