1. How did Americans’ role in, and views of, the federal government change between 1865 and 1939? Do you think the federal government became more or less involved in the daily lives of Americans? Why?
2.Considering the events and aftermath of Reconstruction, how just and how lasting was the peace that eventually did occur? What role did BOTH Andrew Johnson and the Radical Republicans play in Reconstruction? And how would you assess its final outcome? Would you consider Reconstruction a success or a failure? Why?
Through the civil war and aftermath, Federal government was attentive towards the protection of civil and political rights of US citizens. Federal government was not entrenched significantly in economic welfare, though few steps were taken to promote welfare.
But gradually by 1913 government course of action had undergone sea change, now government was no longer confining itself to civil and political rights, ostensibly, pushing through economic reforms to further economic being of its citizens. Income tax was introduced through 16th constitutional amendment. This period is known as period of reconstructions and rise in wealth of nation.
Role of government in economic activities increased significantly and various economic reforms were introduced. New Deal was economic intervention scheme that fundamentally changed the role of government in economic and social areas.
To sum up, we can say that through this period federal government become more involved in daily lives of Americans.
