1. Performance Planning:
Performance is the main component of the performance management. It is the appraisal and rewarding of the performance of the medical coders based on the performance on reimbursement within one year. The employee should reach the target within the year. Compensation may be given for increased work production.
2. Performance Improvement plans:
In this, the medical coders are given with the set of goals and evaluating their performance in achieving those objectives. The coders should show improvement in the performance of reaching the goals. There should be a clear communication between the employer and the coder. Provide counseling based on the expected outcomes. Establish benchmark to measure the goals. Expansion of ICD-10 coding will maximize the reimbursement.
3. Incentive plans:
Incentive plan may be offered for the increased productivity. The coding staff should show increased availability of materials, and following of the coding guidelines. Records must be maintained properly and coding errors should be minimized.
Avoid interruptions and utilize of extensive times to increase the productivity. Increase the quality by minimizing the errors and improve the accuracy. Educational programs should be arranged for coders to minimize time spending on references and technology. Coder's skill should be developed for the benefit of the organization. Assignments should be distributed equally to all coders. Highly qualified professionals should be utilized for the needed area of coding.
