Types of DM:
Type 1- Results from autoimmune disorder of pancrea's inability to produce insulin or the inability of cells responding to produced insulin
Type 2- A condition which leads to insulin resistance and thus failure of cells responding to insulin, as the disease progresses, condition worsen
Gestational DM-Disease - occurs during pregnancy
Complications of DM
Damage to small and large blood vessels of eyes, kidneys and nerves
Damage to eyes causing damage to retina of eye resulting in gradual vision loss and blindness called diabetic retinopathy
Damage to kidney known as diabetic nephropathy causing scarring of tissues, protein loss in urine[proteinuria], chronic kidney disease leading to dialysis and renal transplantation
Damage to nerves called diabetic neuropathy resulting in tingling sensation, altered pain sensation and numbness leading to skin damage.
Drug used to treat diseases of the Thyroid and Pituitary Glands
Somatostatin
Known as a growth inhibiting hormone. Usually administered as 3mg IV. It acts by binding with 5 subtypes of somatostatin receptors which inhibits adenylyl cyclase upon activation with a half-life of 1-3 minutes
