Brands are used to differentiate the products or services f one business from its competitors. Ricardo Machado & Shahida Cassim in their book Marketing for Entrepreneurs defines brand as name, sign, symbol, design or combination of these which identifies a product or service.
Types of brands are classified in different ways using different criteria. Sticking to the question, here I I am discussing private brand and national brand along with their examples.
National brand: The brand i.e. the product or service of manufacturer is sold nationally.
Private Brand: In this case, the product or the services are sold under the brand name created by retailer.
For example: Ice-cream brand "Amul" is a national brand; whereas "Top-n-Town" is a private brand.
My experience with both the brands is pleasant, and I am satisfied with the products of both national as well as private brand.
However, talking about the preference, whenever in the home town I prefer Private brand i.e. Top-n-Town ice-cream. There are two reasons for my selection. First private brands often cost low, and Second, they are well versed with the choice and preference of local people.
