8. What protein modification is commonly used to transduce signaling cascades?
Ans-8.) Phosphorylation is the most common protein modification used to transduce signalling cascades.
* This is a type of covalent modification and is reversible in nature.
* Most commonly serine , tyrosine, threonine residues are involved involved in phosphorylation / dephosphorylation.
* Protein Kinases and Phosphatases are the enzymes which catalyze the reaction of phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins, respectively.
* There are many types of protein kinases involved in signal transduction, all have same basic catalytic activity : they add a phosphate group to an amino acid in a target protein.
* Five groups of protein kinases are distinguished by the type of amino acid residue ,they target :
--- Serine / Threonine kinase
---tyrosine kinase
---Dual specificity kinase ( can phosphorylate either tyrosine or serine / threonine
--- Histidine kinase
---- Aspartate Kinase
