Apply the Energy Story rubric to describe a transformation in biology explicitly describing the initial, intermediate, and final states of matter and energy in the system and the inherit passage of time.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Rules applied to study energy transformation

1. Identifying at least two states (e.g. start and end) in the process.
2. Identifying and listing the matter in the system and its state at the start and end of the process.
3. Describing the transformation of the matter that occurs during the process.
4. Accounting for the "location" of energy in the system at the start and end of the process.
5. Describing the transfer of energy that happens during the process.
6. Identifying and describing mechanism(s) responsible for mediating the transformation of matter and transfer of energy.

Global warming is a simple model to understand transformation of energy in solar radiation. The solar energy hits the earth and transfers its energy to the surface and heats it.some of the energy is reflected back to the space .depending on the concentration of green house gases or carbondioxide some amount of energy is trapped in the earths atmosphere.if little green house gases are present little amount of energy is trapped and earth cools which is inhospitable for life similarly if more green house gases are in the atmosphere more energy is trapped and earth surface heats up which is again a problem.global warming is a good example to study the the flow of carbon and oxygen through different forms and mechanisms by which energy is transfered to and from different components of system.

Describe the “energy story” for the situation below. Be sure to specify the system while including all the relevant energy transfers to/from the system, and transformations within the system. You should also indicate whether you think the the process described in the situation is reversible or not (as described in lecture, a qualitative way to deter- mine whether a process is reversible would be to watch a recording of that process played backwards, and conclude whether that would normally occur...
