The language barrier was the most obvious problem, but not the most important. The biggest problem was the cultural barrier. There is a tremendous difference between dealing with the Hmong and dealing with anyone else. An infinite difference" (p. 91). Please explain what you think Dr. Murphy meant by this statement.
The Hmong people have a very strong set of beliefs and customs.for thousands of years they have made their own standard of living while taking orders from no one.for this reason the Hmong people have had to fight for their freedom as a group. Known as stubborn fighters who would rather flee, fight, or die rather than surrender, they believed that no culture was superior to their own .as the Hmong people started to arrive in the united stated, it was obvious that there would be a major language barrier, which in itself is difficult to deal with. Still there was an even bigger problem and that was the cultural barrier. The Hmong people had a significantly different way of approaching ways to deal with the sick that were unlike anything american medicine had ever used.they believed surgery was taboo because the body would remain in a condition of perpetual imbalance causing the individual to be more susceptible toillness .they also thought the body would be incomplete during the next incarnation if the body went though surgery.for this reason , it was extremely difficult to help the Hmong people with sickness and other ailments.the Hmong people were unwilling to conform to western medicine only taking antibiotics that american doctors prescribed the diagnosis and treatment for Liawas difficult, the language barrier and differences in cultural made it even more difficult.
