Consider the materials used for a bicycle frame. Common materials are aluminum, titanium and steel. A) Explain what are the main considerations for material selection for this application. B) Mention the principal advantages and disadvantages of using the mentioned materials. C) How can advanced materials can be used in this application? Which advanced materials do you propose that can be used?

Solutions

Expert Solution

A) Main considerations of material for bicycle frame is

1. Strength

2. Durability

3. Corrosion resistance

4. Bendability

5. Hardness

6. Shining appearance

7. Cost

8. Long life

B. Advantages and disadvantages of using above materials.

1. Steel :

Advantage - i) easy to bend and shape

ii) durability

iii) easy to repair

iv) affordable

v) an excellent fork material

vi) absorb shocks to soften rough roads

Disadvantages - i) It rusts when handled carelessly.

ii) Steel metal is heavier in weight.

2. Aluminium:

Advantages - i) It doesn't rust

ii) light weight

iii) better shock absorption in comparison to steel.

iv) aluminium forks are generally stiff and light and can be shaped aerodynamically.

Disadvantages - more jarring ride than other materials.

3. Titanium:

Advantages - i) strongest material for frames

ii) long lasting

iii) sprightly ride and electrical handling

Disadvantages - very expensive

C) Advanced materials for frame of bicycles

For increasing strength to weight ratio keeping the cost in control, for high performance bicycles, advanced materials are used.

Advanced materials that can be used are-

I) cromoly - chromium molybdenum alloy or manganese molybdenum steel alloy which is stronger and lighter than steel.

ii) aluminium alloys - age hardening capabilities

iii) fiber reinforced and carbon composites.
