Characteristics of Field Dependent learners

• Field dependent learners take a note of the clues and structures that they see around and use it to make their learning process dependent on their personal experience in that particular environment.
• The field dependent learners have usually very short attention spans.
• The field dependent learners prefer casual environment for better learning.
• Such Individuals are more socially oriented.
• They are usually less competitive as compared to the Independent field individuals.
• They are also found to be less achievement oriented.

Characteristics of Field Independent learners

• Field Independent individuals make a distinction between discrete part of the field,that is different from organised background.
• They are more analytical as compared to field dependent learners.
• The field dependent learners seem to have good problem solving abilities as their approach to the problem is analytical.
• Such Individuals are not so much socially oriented.
• They are usually more competitive as compared to the dependent field individuals.
• They are also found to be achievement oriented.

The field independent and field independent models are important to the educators as it helps them to understand the students they are dealing with. As you would notice from the characteristics of the field independent individuals you would find that these individuals are less dependent on the instructor/educator.Therefore field independent learners would prefer activities and assignments which they can do by themselves with little or no guidance from the instructor as contrast to the field dependent individuals.
