Rank substituents in order of their priority when assigning the E or Z label to an alkene.
Br, CH2CH3, CH2OH, OH, H
Solution:-
To assign the priority numbers to the substituent groups in the alkene we consider the atomic numbers of the substituent group atoms attached to alkene double bond.
The atom with higher atomic numbers gets the first priority and the atom with the lower atomic number gets the second priority.
If therefore there is a tie between the first bonded atoms then we look for the second atom of the substituent group and assign the priority based on the atomic number.
The following are the priority numbers for the given groups.
Number 1 is the first priority and a higher number will be for the lowest priority group.
1= Br
2=OH
3=CH2OH
4=CH2CH3
5=H
