Write plausible Lewis structures for the following ions: N2H5^+, O^2-, NH3OH^+, NH2CN (two strucutres) and NOCl.

Please show all steps and calculations. Use the formal charge concept to choose the more plausible structure.

Expert Solution

Solution :-

The total valence electrons are nothing but the sum of the valence electrons of each atom in the formula.

For the negative charge ion we add the equivalence number of valence electrons as equal to the charge

For the positive ion we subtract the equivalence number of valence electrons as equal to the charge

N2H5^+

Total number of valence electrons = (N*2)+(H*5)-1

                                                               =(5*2)+(5*1)-1

                                                               = 14

O2^-

Total valence electrons = (O*1)+2

                                          =(6*1)+2

                                          = 8

NH3OH^+

Total valance electrons = (N*1)+(H*4)+(O*1)-1

                                          =(5*1)+(1*4)+(6*1)-1

                                          = 14

NH2CN

Total valence electrons = (N*2)+(C*1)+(H*2)

                                         =(5*2)+(4*1)+(2*1)

                                         = 16

NOCl

Total valance electrons =(N*1)+(O*1)+(Cl*1)

                                          =(5*1)+(6*1)+(7*1)

                                         = 18
